Velas Portugal

Velas is a Portuguese village in the Island of São Jorge, Autonomous Region of the Azores, with about 1 900 inhabitants. It is the seat of a municipality with 119.08 km² of area and 5 605 inhabitants (2001), subdivided into 6 parishes. Velas limits to the east with the municipality of Calheta, and limits with the Atlantic Ocean in the other directions. Within this municipality, in the parish of Santo Amaro is the São Jorge airport, which connects the island with others of the Azores archipelago. Candles was elevated to the status of villa in 1500.
