Crato Portugal

The town of Crato has its origin in the donation of its extensive territory made by Sancho II of Portugal to the Order of Malta in 1232. In 1340, after the Battle of Salado, the Portuguese headquarters of the Order was moved from Leça do Balio to Crato, whose Priory became head of the order. Honoring the history of the town, all Portuguese knights of the Order of Malta are still invested in Crato.
