Minorca may be second in size of the Balearics, but it ranks last in commercial decadence. Minorca has undeniably the Balearics’ most beautiful beaches, and the island is bathed in constant breezes that make it especially comfortable. Mahon is the capital of the island and the birthplace of mayonnaise. Built on the cliffs overlooking its charming harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, is the perfect place to stay while exploring the island. Ciutadella, the former island capital, is worth a visit for its charming architecture, including its superb Gothic-Baroque cathedral. It is as well a convenient base for exploring nearby beaches, such as Cala Blanca and Cala Santandria, or prehistoric sites like Torre Trenacada or the Naveta dels Tudons, the largest and best preserved burial chamber in Europe. The British influence is still evident in the island’s architecture, traditions and culture. Most of the island’s architecture has an 18th-century Georgian feel to it and Pomada, local gin mixed with crushed ice, bitter lemon or just lemon juice, is still Minorca’s most popular drink. If relaxed sunny days and a contemplative life sound great to you, Minorca may be your favourite Balearic.
