It is the seat or capital of the small municipality that bears his name, with 65.10 km² of area and 12.494 inhabitants (2001) .The municipality is composed of 4 vilas or 4 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by Ponta do Sol, and to the south it has the Atlantic Ocean. The Municipality was created in 1914.
