Ourique Portugal

Ourique is a Portuguese town belonging to the District of Beja, Alentejo region and intermunicipal community of the Lower Alentejo, with about 3,000 inhabitants. It is the seat of a municipality with 660.15 km² of area and 6,199 inhabitants (2001), subdivided into 6 parishes. The municipality limits to the north with the municipalities of Santiago do Cacém and Aljustrel, to the east with Castro Verde and Almodôvar, to the south with Silves and to the west with Odemira. Ourique received the legacy of D. Dinis in 1290. The municipality is famous because in its outskirts, the Battle of Ourique took place. On the day of Santiago in 1139, Alfonso I the Great defeated the Almorávides. This historic event marked in such a way the Portuguese imaginary, which is portrayed on the coat of arms of Portugal: five escudetes (each with five bezantes), representing the five Moorish kings defeated in the battle.
